Advocacy
As a member of ACEC-NB you are automatically a member of ACEC-Canada
Our advocacy efforts, both locally and nationally, have been steadfast. We are actively addressing concerns related to the Official Languages Requirements for Tender Documents. ACEC-NB, as a member of ACEC-Canada, is playing a pivotal role in raising awareness and engaging with relevant authorities on this matter. We are committed to ensuring that the concerns of consulting engineering firms are heard and addressed.
Official Languages Requirements for Tender Documents
Following the release of a new procurement policy in 2022 that requires all engineering and architectural documents prepared for federal government tenders to be submitted in both official languages, ACEC has been quick to raise concerns about its unintended consequences—notably, that it precludes many consulting engineering firms from participating in federal procurement, while also increasing risk of higher costs, delays, and commercial and professional liability. Furthermore, it will severely diminish the federal government's capacity to deliver on its capital programs.
ACEC has twice met with the office of the Public Services and Procurement Minister on this issue and continues to engage with relevant departments. Further, as we have not yet seen the government’s often-promised public consultation on this new policy, ACEC commissioned its own third-party, independent research to study its impacts on engineering firms. The research was completed in the fall, and ACEC plans to present the results to government officials during a meeting on December 18, so they understand the magnitude of the problems created by the new requirements.
You can see a summary of the results here.
ACEC CANADA PARLIAMENT HILL DAY
On October 19th, close to 60 industry leaders from across Canada came to Ottawa to rally the industry for ACEC-Canada’s 2023 Parliament Hill Day. During this cornerstone advocacy activity, they amplified the sector’s voice by meeting with Ministers, Members of Parliament (MPs), Senators, and other policy makers. Over the course of some 35 meetings with representatives from across party lines, they discussed how consulting engineering firms play a key role in planning, designing, and building resilient and prosperous communities in Canada and across the world.
Following the meetings on Parliament Hill, ACEC-Canada members gathered for an evening of celebrations at the Canadian Consulting Engineering Awards (CCEA) gala. Several MPs joined the festivities, networking with award winners and industry leaders from their ridings.
